H.E. Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), with Mr. Sorasask Pienwej, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, Mr. Nuth Phasuk, Secretary-General of the Senate, attended 39th AIPA General Assembly Opening Ceremony at Raffles City Convention Centre, Singapore.

     On 4th September 2018, the Thai delegation, led by H.E. Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), with Mr. Sorasask Pienwej, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, Mr. Nuth Phasuk, Secretary-General of the Senate, attended 39th AIPA General Assembly Opening Ceremony at Raffles City Convention Centre, Singapore.


     The Opening Ceremony began with the welcome speech by H.E. Mr. Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore and President of AIPA.  He noted that AIPA was the organization that continued to thrive and its success guaranteed its role as an important platform to promote regional cooperation and understanding amongst parliamentarians in the region.  Furthermore, he added that this forum would positively contribute to mutual understanding, and build trust and confidence between its members.  In connmction with its working, he imformed that there was also a sub-meeting of AIPACODD for discussion on Drug problems in the region.  Lastly, he noted that AIPA was in a unique position to raise awareness of ASEAN to the people and gave voice to people so that they could express their opinions freely.  He also stressed that AIPA needed to listen to more suggestions from the public.


     H.E. Mr. Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, then gave the opening speech and said that the AIPA forum has served as an important platform for strengthening the works of ASEAN.  He emphasized that given the emerging challenges that required collective actions by ASEAN members, the AIPA meeting was an opportunity for solving problems together.  In regard to AIPA parliamentarians, he believed that they had a key role to play in helping their citizens to better understand the importance of a more inter-connected ASEAN and were well-placed to encourage a mind-set of creativity and innovation among the people.  In addition, he noted that ASEAN could benefit from digitaltization, withont missing any important opportunites and address the challenges in the world with the ASEAN citizens as a strong support.
